Mobile telecommunications firm Telefonica Moviles (Movistar) has reported that it closed the first half of 2009 with 14.3mn clients. It has an 81% participation in the market, with 22.8mn mobile telephone lines. The firm's client base is growing most significantly in the provinces, which now represent 60% of its total clients.
Movistar also reported that mobile phone tariffs in Peru are falling at a rate of 20% per year and the average cost per minute of USD 0.06 (EUR 0.04) per minute is lower than many other countries in the region, including Brazil, Chile and Venezuela. Movistar will invest more than PEN 600mn (EUR 142.99mn USD 203.32mn) in 2009 and hopes that 85 out of every 100 inhabitants will have access to mobile phone service by the end of 2009.

América Móvil likely to invest $200 million to enlarge infrastructure in Peru
The general manager of América Móvil (Peru), Humberto Chávez, reported today that the company aims to invest approximately 200 million dollars in enlarging telecom's infrastructure in Peru this year."This investment is based on the fact that our company is strongly betting for the development of telecommunications in Peru, especially the wireless one", he affirmed.
Chávez specified that after eight years in Peru, the Mexican company has an accumulated investment of around one billion dollars.
Up to now, Claro (the commercial name of América Móvil which offers its mobile services) has around six and a half million users and thsi number is expected to increase with the wireless landline phone services.
Chávez mentioned that the potential of the Peruvian market in this area is important since the penetration level of the wireless landline phone services is very low reaching only ten percent.

Spanish Telefonica Invests $210 Mln in Peru Jan-Sept 2007
Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica invested a total $210 mln (144 mln euro) in Peru for the period from January to September 2007, Peruvian daily Andina said on November 12, 2007.
The number of the company's clients in Peru totalled 11.2 million in the same period, of them 4.0 million people used fixed telephony and the rest were clients of the mobile telephone service.
In turn, the clients of Telefonica in Latin America rose by 14.9 pct from January to September 2007 in comparison to the nine months to September 2006. The rise was mainly attributed to the 20.2 pct increase of the mobile telephony clients, whose number reached 94.7 million.
The most significant rise of the mobile telephony clients was registered in Peru, up 60 pct, Mexico, up 48.8 pct, Central America, up 36.8 pct and Argentina, up 28.8 pct.

Rural Telecom wins broadband licence in Peru
Rural Telecom, Peru-based VSAT operator, has won a licence to offer broadband services in over 1,700 localities in Peru, covering over 1.5 million possible customers, reports Ahciet. With the move, the company will receive USD 8.84 million funding from the government. Osiptel, Peruvian telecommunications regulator, will supervise the quality and continuity of the project.

Motorola launches Mototrbo system in Peru
Motorola has launched its Mototrbo two-way digital radio system in Peru. The system integrates voice and data communications, and is customised to meet the needs of each customer. The system incorporates digital technology into two-way analogue radios. The system allows for the supply of advanced solutions and applications for professional communications. Claro Peru, Nextel del Peru win mobile concessions in Peru
Claro Peru and digital trunking operator Nextel del Peru have been awarded mobile concession licences from ProInversion, Peru's state agency for promoting private investment. Claro Peru is a unit of America Movil. Nextel del Peru is owned by US mobile holding firm NII Holdings. Claro was awarded the Band B licence, equating to the 835-845MHz, 880-890MHz, 846.5-849MHz and 891.5-894MHz spectrum blocks, for USD 22.22 million, which was USD 20,000 above the base price. Nextel del Peru won the Bands D and E, for USD 27 million, or USD 1.5 million above the base price. Band D covers the 1,865-1,870MHz and 1,945-1,950MHz blocks, and Band E band covers 1,882.5-1,895MHz and 1,962.5-1,975Mhz. Nextel was pre-qualified for Band B, but made no offer. With Band B, the winning bidder will need to have 500,000 lines in service outside Lima and Callao, and must cover 200 districts which have no service by the operator. The operator of Bands D and E must have 500,000 lines in service in total.

Telefonica del Peru Reports 527,000 Broadband Clients End-H1 2007
The Peruvian unit of Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica, Telefonica del Peru, reported 527,000 broadband clients at the end of the first half of 2007, up 20 pct year-on-year, Telefonica del Peru said on July 25, 2007.
Telefonica del Peru provides broadband Internet access service under the brand Speedy.
In the first six months of 2007 the highest rise was registered in the number of residential broadband clients, up by 29 pct. Residential users concentrate 82 pct of Peruvian broadband Internet market. Corporate users, including public booths, and state institutions accounted for 17 pct of the broadband Internet users in the country.
Currently, the capital of Lima represents 70 pct of the total Internet market, Telefonica del Peru's premium segment director, Rainer Spitzer, said.
In the provinces of Tacna and Arequipa, southern Peru, Piura, northwestern Peru, and La Libertad, western Peru, Telefonica del Peru registered a rise in broadband Internet users by an average of 6.0 pct year-on-year in the first half of 2007.
The company targets more than one million Speedy users for 2011. To achieve the target, the company will rely on technology innovation, constant update of products, and formation of strategic alliances with leading brands in the sector, Spitzer pointed out.

Telefónica posts US$19.8mn in net profit in Q2
Peru's incumbent fixed line carrier Telefónica del Perú (TdP) posted net profits of 63mn soles (US$19.8mn) in the second quarter of 2007, a 23.5% increase on the 51mn soles seen in 2Q06, attributed mainly to improved operating profit, the company said in a statement. Operating profit was 179mn soles, up 11.9% from 160mn soles in 2Q06.
TdP, a unit of Spain's Telefónica (NYSE: TEF), saw operating revenues of 1.11bn soles, flat compared to the same quarter a year ago.
Revenues from local fixed telephony services totaled 391mn soles in the quarter, down 3.6% from 2Q06, while public and rural telephony services generated revenues of 167mn soles, down 25.4% year-on-year.
However, the internet segment saw Q2 revenues of 164mn soles, up 24.1% from the year-ago period. Pay TV services brought in 108mn soles, 25.1% more than 2Q06.
In the local fixed telephony segment, TdP ended the quarter with 2.4mn subscribers compared to 2.29mn at end-2Q06. Internet connections totaled 527,339 at end-Q2, up from 389,118 at the same time last year.

America Movil sees Peruvian subscribers rise to 4.36 mln
America+Movil had 4.36 million mobile subscribers in Peru at end-June, up 75.5 percent from 2.48 million at end-June 2006. Net additions in Q2 were 496,000, up 82.6 percent vs Q2 2006. Revenue for Q2 was PEN 427 million, up 43.4 percent vs PEN 298 million in the year-earlier period. Driven by lower pricing, MOUs rose 22.8 percent annually. EBITDA was PEN 138 million, up 41.8 percent. EBITDA margin was 32.2 percent, vs 32.6 percent. ARPU fell 21.1 percent.
